The difference between communication technology and information technology is that communication technology is about the facilitation of communicating between people while information technology is concerned with what computers do and how they work. Communication technology encompasses electronic systems that are used for the communication between groups or individuals which are not present at the same place. This type of communication regards the way people write or talk to one another and exchange sounds, pictures or messages. Information technology is about software (programs) and algorithms or hardware (devices) that are used to process, retrieve, and store data. Simply put, this term is in reference to all devices and computer applications.
Information technology is sometimes referred to as IT and it covers a large range of areas such as data constructs, programming languages, and computer hardware and computer software. Information technology professionals perform a variety of operation (Competencies/IT Disciplines) that encompass things such as designing information databases, computer networks, and installing applications. Some duties in which IT professionals perform include the administration and management of entire systems, software and database design, engineering computer hardware, networking, and data management. Information technology is beginning to grow into areas of technology such as automobiles, televisions, cell phones and more.
The terms information and communication can be combined and is called ICT, which is sometimes used as the synonym for information technology. It is usually a more general term that emphasizes the role of telecommunications (wireless signals and telephone lines) in modern forms of information technology. ICT encompasses all the technical avenues used to aid communication and manage information which includes necessary software and network hardware. This means that ICT has broadcast media, telephony, IT, various kinds of video transmission, and processing and audio. Currently the term ICT refers to the combining of computer networks with telephone networks through a single link or cabling system
